One of my self improvement goals is to find 3 good things that I have done each day.  By coming up with new things each day my hope is to learn more about myself and build up my self worth.  You can read more about why 3 Good Things  here

  1. We ate all three meals at home today, even though I wanted to go out to dinner
  2. Enjoyed a fun facebook chat with some new friends.
  3. Had a fun, productive day.

I’m running a bit late on posting my three good things, but I’m happy that I’ve been remembering to write them, so I want to make sure they get posted, even if it’s a few days late.  So here they are for Wednesday.

  1. I’m proud of the work I was able to get done for both of my jobs.
  2.  Made a decision without having to get anyones approval.  Even though it was a little decision, I was still pleased to do it.
  3. Recognized that I was tired and went to bed.  Didn’t try to stay up and work with would have probably been a waste of time.

3 Good Things – Sept 30, 2011

Well, I’ve missed a few days.  The past few days I have been unable to think of three good things.  I came to the conclusion today that that is unacceptable.  If I can’t think of 3 good things about my day, I haven’t been paying attention, which is the whole reason for this journey – to pay attention.  So, here are today’s three good things.

  1. I remembered to buy a sympathy card that needs to be mailed tomorrow.
  2. I started back on my 5K training.
  3. I left food on my plate at lunch and dinner.

I started to put “I returned to recording three good things” but thought that might be a bit like cheating, so I didn’t.  But I do feel that it is a good thing that I’ve returned to focusing on the positive.

  1. I did the dishes right after dinner, instead of waiting until late.
  2. I spoke to clients with confidence, answering their questions without hesitation.
  3. I practiced engaging in conversation with a number of different people instead of  trying hard to avoid and turn away from back and forth conversation.

How It Came About

September 25, 2011

After years and years of destroying a relationship by avoiding conflict, burying my head in the sand and imagining that everything was perfect I’ve decided it is time to grow up.  The relationship is not dead yet, although it has been flat-lined for quite some time.

I don’t want it to die…..I’ve never wanted it to die.  Although it’s been more important to me to avoid things than feel uncomfortable and deal with them.   So, now I am learning how to get in touch with who I am.  Learning how to keep grounded in reality instead of off in some fantasy land.

I started this journey by taking a personality test…..it is called the Enneagram Test. I discovered through this test that I am a Type 9.  After reading what that meant, I was shocked!  I have never taken any sort of test or quiz that pegged me so perfectly.  I know this probably won’t be true for everyone, but it really worked for me.

I’m sure I will go into detail on Type 9 traits as this blog continues but here is a brief overview -

Healthy Type 9 - Deeply receptive, accepting, unselfconscious, emotionally stable and serene. Trusting of self and others, at ease with self and life, innocent and simple. Patient, unpretentious, good-natured, genuinely nice people.

Unhealthy Type 9 - Can be highly repressed, undeveloped, and ineffectual. Feel incapable of facing problems: become obstinate, dissociating self from all conflicts. Neglectful and dangerous to others.  Wanting to block out of awareness anything that could affect, them, they dissociate so much that they eventually cannot function: numb, depersonalized.

Unfortunately I am deeply in the unhealthy section.  It’s dangerous to me and others.  So, I have decided to work my way out.  The ways I am trying to do that is to concentrate and focus on everything that happens.  Stop the daydreaming, and live in the real world.  Which might seem silly, but I am a master at daydreaming…..my brain is always somewhere else.

I know it will be hard, and I’m not expecting perfection but I am somewhat looking forward to the challenge.  And saving a relationship that means the world to me fortunate byproduct.  Because I can’t make this transformation for someone else.. I have to do it for me.

I am keeping this blog as a journal of my progress.  By making it public, there is always the chance that it will help someone else on their journey as well.

3 Good Things – Sept 24, 2011

Here are my 3 things for today:

  1. I fixed lunch at home instead of going out.
  2. I asked someone if what I had done upset them – which is a break from the usual of just avoiding it (it hadn’t upset them, in case you were wondering)
  3. I remembered to do a load of laundry that needed to be done before it was too late.

Some days my good things might be silly, other days they will be profound.  Some will be easy to think of, others not so much.  But here’s hoping that by making myself think of the good I am doing I can lift myself up out of this nastiness that has become my pattern.
